Bindi Talk....

The bindi is arguably the most visually fascinating of all forms of body decoration. Hindus attach great importance to this ornamental mark on the forehead between the two eyebrows — a spot considered a major nerve point in human body since ancient times. Also loosely known as 'tika', 'pottu', 'sindoor', 'tilak', 'tilakam', and 'kumkum', a bindi is usually a small or a big eye-catching round mark made on the forehead as adornment.
What's that Red Dot?In southern India, girls choose to wear a bindi, while in other parts of India it is the prerogative of the married woman. A red dot on the forehead is an auspicious sign of marriage and guarantees the social status and sanctity of the institution of marriage. The Indian bride steps over the threshold of her husband's home, bedecked in glittering apparels and ornaments, dazzling the red bindi on her forehead that is believed to usher in prosperity, and grants her a place as the guardian of the family's welfare and progeny.
A Hot Spot! The area between the eyebrows, the sixth chakra known as the 'agna' meaning 'command', is the seat of concealed wisdom. It is the centre point wherein all experience is gathered in total concentration. According to the tantric cult, when during meditation the latent energy ('kundalini') rises from the base of the spine towards the head, this 'agna' is the probable outlet for this potent energy. The red 'kumkum' between the eyebrows is said to retain energy in the human body and control the various levels of concentration. It is also the central point of the base of the creation itself — symbolising auspiciousness and good fortune.

Before you read on, let me first say, I love India, I love Indian people, I love bindis, I love Indian culture. I love almost everything about India. Perhaps it's my sick sense of humor, but these jokes about bindis, or the red spot that Hindu women wear on their foreheads, had me ROTFLMAO....anyway, only 4 or 5 people a day read my blog, so I think i'm safe from having my visa ripped from my possessions for being derogatory.......

The red dot joke:
For centuries, Hindu women have worn a red spot on their foreheads. We have always naively thought that it had something to do with their religion. The true story has recently been revealed by the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
When one of these women gets married, she brings with her a dowry. On her wedding night, the husband scratches off the red spot to see if he has won either a convenience store, a gas station, a donut shop, or a motel in the United States. Just thought you'd like to know.

The other red dot joke:
Why do Indian women have that red dot on their forehead? Store owners, tired of the shoppers constant haggling, have begun taking matters into their own hands, going up to the women and repeatedly poking their index finger between the womans eyes while yelling, "I thought I told you to get out of my store"

The third and final tasteless red dot joke:
What is the purpose of the red dot on Indian womens foreheads?
It's for target practice.

Groannnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hehe.. i've read those jokes somewhere too.. i guess indian folks just have to learn to take the jokes lightly like everyone else!

the bindi is most alluring, and when used properly (i.e with regards to shape of face etc), really increases the hotness factor! heh, maybe i've been around too many hot indian women!

nice to see your interest in indian culture :-)
